St. Peter's Bascillica

One approaches St. Peter's from the east, the direction of the rising sun. Here we see the obelisk in front of the east face of the building.

The obelisk defines due east and equinox sunrises.

Altars are placed at the 'crossing' in churches. Here we see the square altar at the Vatican. It is twice as tall as it is square; a double cube. In the holiest place we see the Cathedra Petri, the throne of Peter.

The Altar

Here we approach the light by facing the afternoon sun.
