Enoch, The Kabbalah, and the Glass Bead Game

The Royal Arch
The other Enoch story pertains (on the surface) to a particular fragment of knowledge, that being the correct name or the correct pronunciation of the True Name of God, and provides the focal point for the thirteenth Scottish Rite Degrees named the Royal Arch of Solomon. [See Albert Pike's comments on this degree from "Morals and Dogma". http://www.sacred-texts.com/mas/md/md14.htm] In Pike's comments he points to a universal ancient belief in the notion of the 'sanctity of the Divine Name or Creative Word'.The latter was feared supposedly because "by its utterance the world was created", and the former was proscribed because (as the priest will tell you), the possession of the true pronunciation of the deities name was deemed to confer extraordinary and supernatural powers. Therefore, the only person who can be trusted with that is, you guessed it, the High Priest. "He builded an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent". (Gen 26:25) Theoretically, the well being of the Hebrews depended on the ritual sacrifices performed at the Temple, as well as ceremonies that took place inside; in particular, the Yom Kippur ceremony. As was pointed out above, the idea about beginning the day at sunSET derives from the Egyptian view that equates the sun's darkness to the human transit of the earth plane, our incarnation. On the yearly scale this translate to the fall equinox, which is when the Hebrews mark new years, with the idea that the new year, like birth, is analogous to the Creation, the Beginning of the Universe. SO, each year (on a different date because Yom Kippur is determined by the sun AND the moon), the Priest would go into the Holy of Holies in the Temple (which is cube shaped, the cube being the symbol for the Creation or materiality in general) and he would intone (pronounce) the Magic Word while a crowd outside made a ruckus so that no one would overhear him and steal the Word. [Note, this is where Zacharia is when the angel comes to Elizabeth and tells her that she is carrying John.]
Nine Chambers
![]() According to the legend, the Lord looked favorably on Enoch and decided to reveal to him the True Name of God. Enoch is instructed to put the Name in a Golden Triangle on a White Cube, and conceal it in an excavated location that features nine arches. (Remember that an arch is supported by two pillars, like is mentioned in the other Enoch legend.) The cube goes in the nineth compartment. The story has two different endings. In one, the door to Enoch's excavations was discovered while preparing the foundation for Solomon's Temple. Note that the sense presented by the idea that Enoch's chambers were found while preparing the foundation of Solomon's Temple is that the Mysteries supplied the basis for the Temple religion, that one was a continuation of the other, just as some suggest that the doctrine of the modern Church is a continuation of the Kabbalah. Many churches, including St. Peter's in Rome, incorporated former pagan underground structures into their building plans. In the other version, the Hebrews suffer through the destruction and desecration of the Temple, and are forced into exile. During that time the sacrifices and ceremonies are not being performed, and in allegorical terms, the Word was Lost, and the people once again turned from the religion of the Temple due to loss of meaning. [The modern cinematic adaptation of this story is found nested in the movie "Thunderdome".] In the second version of the Enoch story, the apartments and the cube are eventually located and the Word was Recovered (theoretically, because you can't get a pronunciation from a printed word or symbol) all thanks to Enoch. This of course is not a history, but "an allegory, representing the perpetuation of the knowledge of the True God in the sanctuaries of initiation. By the subterranean vaults you may understand the places of initiation, which in the ancient ceremonies were generally under ground." (Albert Pike) Here Enoch personifies the institution of the Ancient Mysteries (the name Enoch means initiate or initiator), the nine chambers indicate the undeground location of the ceremonies, and the hidden cube represents the Secret Tradition that was taught therein. Nine WorldsCompare the foregoing to what Manley P. Hall says in "The Secret Teachings of All Times" (1962): "The Nordic Mysteries were given in nine chambers or caverns, the candidate advancing through them in sequential order. These chambers of initiation represented the nine spheres into which the Drottars divided the Universe... There is undoubtably a relationship between the nine worlds of the Scandinavians and the nine spheres, or planes, through which the initiates of the Eleusian Mysteries passed in their ritual of regeneration." Hall connects the number of chambers and the number of grades in the initiation to the number of celestial planes or spheres. This means that both the initiation process and the underground locations were designed to serve as (were based on/ were designed to teach) models of the universe. While the chambers served as a model of structure of the Universe, the initiations were to mirror steps in the soul's journey (which was analogous to the development of the world), represented by the stars, the sun and the other planets. (It is likely that Enoch's 'arch' is really an arc or circle.) The Lodge form represents the order of, and the initiation process represents the workings of the Universe. As Bromwell puts it, "An organized Lodge is a representation of the mysteries in which place and form as well as time are fixed symbols." p 342 "As Masonry makes the system of the natural Lodge, that is the world, the basis and means of it's lessons, it must of necessity represent in it's own order the universal mode or plan of natural operations and productions." p 305 "The Lodge is a symbolic effigy of the universe and it's work must correspond with the work of the Divine or universal order." P 49 In terms of myth-making, we know that the authors of the mysteries developed a legendary scheme that embodied an image of the created universe and the invisible forces that regulate it, from astronomical facts. Michael Schneider suggests that the number nine represents "an ultimate extent, journey or duration" without ever explicitly connecting it to the soul's journey. Examples that he presents are 'cloud nine'; the fact that Odin, ruler of the nine norse worlds hung on the Yggdrasil tree for nine days to secure the secret wisdom for mankind; Odysseus wandered for nine years after the Trojan War; the Greeks honored nine muses while the Egyptians had nine gods or neteru; Milton tells us that it took Lucifer nine days to fall from heaven and that he is confined in the ninth cosmic ring. Remember that the Greeks saw the soul's journey as entailing moving through seven intermediate planes; Rev 1 mentions 7 candlesticks, stars and spirits before the throne. Adding the stars at the top and earth at the bottom, we get a total of nine planes. The Menorah used for the Festival of Lights comes in 7 and 9 versions. Some groups used a stairs or ladder with 7 or 9 steps to symbolize the same thing. We are reminded of Jacob's dream (Genesis 1:28) where he saw "a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it". This is a vertical metaphor. [Note that earlier I said that the Greeks taught that we come from and return to the stars, but I did not say that they believed that. I am, of course, speaking of teachers and not the masses, for whom the story was intended. Even today, some people speak of 'going to heaven' when they die. It is unlikely that the intellectuals believed this legend, and that it was just an astronomy learning tool. Coming from and returning to the stars is just another way of saying 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust'.]
![]() Next Hall gives us this image entitled "The Nine Worlds of the Odinic Mysteries". This is the basic shape of Yggdrasil, the Nordic version of the Tree of Life. [In this image the Earth is at the center, and the sun, the soul's goal, is at the top.] As you can see, this is an isometric view of the Cartesian 3D grid (three axes, x,y and z) and the six directions in space (up, down, forward, back, left right). If we convert the image to Greek, we put the sun at the center, the Milky Way at the top, and earth at the bottom. What were cardinal direction markers (N,S.E,W) in the geocentric version, now represent the four corners of the sun's path, that being the (so called) fixed zodiac signs (or the alpha stars in those groups). These are of course, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio (sometimes called Aquilla and symbolized by an eagle) and Aquarius which we see as four beasts in the Bible ( Rev 4 and Ezek. 1:10)

Seven StarsIf the earth is left off at the bottom and the stars are left off at the top we get the image below, which is a hexagram featuring the seven 'planetary' spheres. This image tells us not to forget the 7th point at the center of the hexagram, and depicts 'six around one'; the one being the sun, which is at the center. In Rev 1 we see "in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man... in his right hand seven stars... and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength". Who ever designed this image apparently understood that the Sun is the center of the system. (Remember that Enoch was the 7th Patriarch, and that he lived 365 years, the number of days in a solar year, and note that a cube is concealed in a hexagon.) This reminds us of the days of Creation, the days of the week (down the middle we set Sat, Sun and Mon), the seven stars and candlesticks in Revelations 1, and the Menorah. The nine worlds figure derives from this one by extending each of the three axes and adding six more points (to include the 4 direction markers). ![]() The red line indicates the path of the soul as taught by the Greeks, looking like a lightning strike. Rev. 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. In Ezekiel 1:14 we read that "the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning".
SaturnSince the moon is the last plane before reaching the earth, and since the moon rules Cancer, Cancer is called the Gate of Birth. Since Saturn is the last planetary sphere on the 'return trip', and since Saturn rules Capricorn, Capricorn is called the Gate of Death. Note that Satan is probably a transliteration of the word Saturn, and that the creature associated with Capricorn is a sea goat. Saturn, was the child of the Earth Mother Gaia and the Sky Father Ouranos. Ouranos is the first sphere on the nine worlds image, Saturn is second, and the earth is ninth at the bottom. In terms of importance Saturn is the first fire before the throne in the nine worlds plan. Reading mythology we learn that Saturn castrates his father and assumes power from him, then he is relieved of power by his son Jupiter. The legend tells of a war between Saturn and his five brothers and Jupiter and his five brothers and sisters. Jupiter persuaded Prometheus (who was punished for giving fire to man) to join his side. Jupiter wins. Saturn and his brothers were imprisoned in the Tartarus, a dark gloomy region at the end of the Earth. This sounds a lot like Satan being bound and cast into a pit. Taurus is the fixed earth sign, symbol of materiality. The Roman version says that when Jupiter assumed the throne, Saturn fled to Rome and established the Golden Age, a time of perfect peace and harmony. The Feast of Saturnalia was held every year in the winter at the Winter Solstice (sun enters Capricorn 'ruled' by Saturn) , supposedly in memory of this Golden Age.
Ten SpheresThe Kabbalistic Tree of Life uses 10 spheres instead of nine (or seven), and adds the Throne of God at the top. On the ten sphere tree, Daath (Saturn's old position - now the Abyss) is not used, and Saturn and the Zodiac are placed parallel to one another (in either of two configurations). The goddess Nuit is represented as a female figure whose body is composed of a field of stars (the Milky Way), and she is synonymous with the notion of space. Saturn is Chronos or Time. The top sphere is the Source and spheres 2 and 3 are space and time. This is the new trinity, the Triple Crown created by the move from nine to ten spheres.
![]() As you can see, all of these images serve as illustrations of different word pictures about cosmology (a static view which looks at the structure of the World) and cosmogeny (which looks at the World as a process analogous to the soul's journey), each of which has it's own internal logic. Not all agree on what John Mitchell calls the "geometer's image of the ideal cosmology". "Like other geometric matters different minds will form different conceptions of combinations for the symbolic representation of the ideas contemplated - the perfecting of such designs is part of the Craft of Masonry." Bromwell 227 But no matter what the 'symbolic representation' (whether it be 7, 9 or ten spheres), the fact is that they all represent a particular view of the world. Notice that of the two versions of the tree above, the one on the left looks like a ladder while the one on the right 'favors' a tree. The tree represents the world as structure and process also.
Thirteen CirclesPutting circles where there were once direction markers, the number increases to 13 like Metatron's Cube. Remember that the Royal Arch Degree speaks of nine chambers with a cube, and is the 13th Scottish Rite Degree; and that Metatron and Enoch are the same entity. Note that the cube is composed of nested hexagrams.
