DC Map Grid

As you can see below, Mass Ave has a bend in it at N. Capitol Street, with the orientation of the eastern part of that being determined by the position of Lincoln Square, east of the CB on East Capitol Street.

This is an image taken from L'Enfant's first draft of his plan (June 1791), showing Mass Ave in red. Arrows indicate the direction that the line segments moved between copies of the plan. Notice that when the map was changed, the two line segments were 'pivoted' around Mt Vernon Sq and Lincoln Sq.

Note that East Capitol Street is an axis of symmentry in the map. While Maryland Avenue, directed towards the Jeff Mml, mirrors the section of Penn Ave between the CB and WH, on the east side of the Capitol Maryland mirrors the other section of PA. The pairs of streets at Lincoln Square all mirror each other.

If the CB had been place in the 'ideal' position, E. Cap. St. would be south of where it is now, and both Penn and Maryland Avenues would be re-aligned, as we have already seen. Note that if Lincoln Square were further to the south, the bend in Mass Ave would be even greater, UNLESS the square was also moved farther to the east.

Which raises a question, why do you imagine that the square was not placed further east in the first place so that Mass Ave would be straight? I believe that the answer to that question has to do with the scale of the eastern part of the map, which is clearly diferent from that on the western half. In the east the central axis is at 12th Street instead of 16th Street, like in the west, and 5th St appears to be analogous to 8th St. I suggest that if you increase the scale on the east side of the map, that it would mirror the west half at N-S Capitol Street.

In the image above, I have projected lines from nodes in the west onto the vertical axes in the east. Next I marked what appear to be points of significance in green. As you can see below, the eastern half of the map approximates an un-distrorted Metatron's Cube with the main diagonal being Maryland Avenue running from the southwest to the northeast.

In this image I have moved East Capitol St to the south, along with the whole eastern side of the map. Next I extended Penn and Mass Ave's across CapSt. Then I 'stretched' the eastern section until LSq fell on Mass Ave. Note that this produces the same scale on the right as on the left, meaning that LSq is now the same distance east of the CB as the WH is west of it.

The diagonals of the grid cross at N-S axis lines.

The map now mirrors E-W at the CB (N-S Cap St) and mirrors N-S at the WH.
