DC Map Grid

Note how, when we extend east-west lines from Scott Circle (N Street) and the top of the triangle, N Street crosses N Capitol Street (the 0 line) where NY Ave does, and crosses Penn Ave where it intersects with our 32 line that I drew, while the line through the top of the triangle meets Mass Ave at the 32 line and Rhode Island at the 0 line. Note how these four avenues form a rhombus grid.

Measure angles here if you like; I show 52 and less than 24 degrees.

The rhombus determines the horizontal and vertical scale of the map grid north of the WH.

But, if we project Penn Ave past the WH, we see that it does not agree with the section of that between the CB and WH (in purple). The curent CB position does not match the grid pattern established in the northern half of 16th Street. The position of the Jeff Mml and the size of Alison's grid is a function of Maryland Ave reflecting Penn Ave at the CB. The vertical scale is different in the south than it is in the north of the west side of the map. [Alison ignores the map east of N-S Capitol Street.]

As a matter of fact, if you look at the larger map (below), you will see that the position of the CB appears to have been displaced sligthly to the north, because if it had been a little bit further south, Penn Ave would be straight from Georgetown to the East Branch. You may recall that David Ovason ("Secret Architecture") claims that Penn Ave was purposefully designed with a crook in it so that the section between the CB and WH would point to a particular sunset. While he points to "one sunset" on "one day", we know that the sun sets in the same place twice a year - it sets there in August AND May, although Ovason never mentions May.

In the topographic map of the 1791 Capitol area, we see that the position on the straight line, 2400 meters east of the WH fell on the side of a steep hill, so it was moved to the north and Penn Ave now has a crook in it. The current position of the CB results in an orientation of Penn Ave that is very close to the 19.5 degree angle which has a sine value of .33333, the 1:3 relationship. The short side of that triangle (the distance from the WH to the Jefferson Pier) is one third the hypotenuse (Penn Ave between the CB and WH).

Notice how a straight line (New Hampshire Ave) connects the triangle top to Arlington , and how the avenue from there is directed to the center of the Ellipse on the 16th Street axis, at the same apparent angle as the above grid. Note also how the line connecting the top of the triangle with Logan Cr and Mt Vernon Square intesects N-S Capitol Street below the current CB position, and on the straight line projection of the 'upper' part of Penn Ave (blue rectangle above, red circle below). The right side of the triangle points to where the straightened Penn Ave crosses the N-S Capitol axis, south of the current CB location.

[Note what Gary Osborn has to say about this triangle. "The next logical step would be to complete the triangle by drawing another 52-degree line opposite, and we find that when we do this, the Capitol Building becomes included in this design... The fact that the Capitol Building is right on the spot where the other 52-degree line ends at the base, is evident that what we see was the intended picture." He depicts Penn as being straight from Georgetown to the Capitol Building. Unfortunately, both lines DO NOT point at the CB, but below it.]

We can use a circle to show that this position and Scott Cr are equidistant from the WH. [I estimate Scott Cr to be 1025 meters north of the WH.] An E-W line at this point serves as the base of the triangle that Osborn speaks of. That spot is the 'ideal position' for the CB, which I figure to be about 165 meters south of the center of the current CB.

You can compare this new figure with Osborn's figure 6. Figure 4 does not work because he fudged his lines and presumed that Penn Ave is straight.

Another circle re-positions the Jeff Mml, making it equidistant from the tip of the triangle. A line from there to the spot below the CB matches the grid.

It appears as if the CB , the Jeff Mml and the Wash Mmt have all been displaced.
