The Shaft and Grotto
|
|---|
In the pyramid, there is a narrow shaft leading from the Ascending Passage to the Descending Passage, which is of a questionable origin. That is, scholars are not sure if this is an original element in the pyramid.
![]() Half-way up (or down) the shaft, there is what has been called the grotto; which is a small chamber in the shaft at ground level, where the masonry meets the bedrock. Looking at the DC map, we see that the (now removed) canal (two branches, in blue, below) correlates closely to the shaft, with an opening at the same location as the grotto.

![]() Looking at a topographic map, you can see that the reason that the canal did not match the location of the shaft more closely, is that the builders chose to put the canal in an already existing "valley".
